Start with what you want to do outside: eat with family, host friends, read in the shade or gather near a fire feature. Place the actual dimensions of your table, chairs and grill on a simple plan. The finished pavers are only part of the installation. Soil conditions, excavation, base preparation, edge restraint and drainage influence how the patio performs. Ask how the contractor will handle a low spot, a slope or a transition at the door. Do not assume that all patios can use the same base depth or drainage detail.
